Rhye is a low-key collaboration between two well-regarded producers, multi-instrumentalists, and vocalists: Denmark native Robin Braun (aka Robin Hannibal, member of Boom Clap Bachelors, Owusu & Hannibal, Parallel Dance Ensemble, and Quadron) and Canadian Mike Milosh (aka Milosh). In 2010, Hannibal contacted Milosh -- who had released three albums on Plug Research, home to Quadron -- about working on a remix. The meeting was more productive than anticipated and developed into the initially secretive project Rhye. Check out their video for the song Open.

Braun and Milosh connected with the Innovative Leisure label, where they released their first two singles -- Open and The Fall -- in 2012. The former was licensed for a Victoria's Secret commercial.

After signing to Polydor in the U.K. (Loma Vista/Republic in the U.S.), they prepared their first album, Woman, which was released in March 2013. Milosh's soft, yearning voice made for an ideal match with Braun's elegant, organic/synthetic hybrid sound -- a modern form of R&B-inspired sophisti-pop.

Rhye's Jivewired Bio: When seductively smooth duo Rhye's candle-lit Open started oozing online earlier this year, listeners were left to imagine who exactly was behind the track's breathy, Sade-like vocals. Is she a totally fresh face or a known entity hiding behind a digital cloak? Is she American? British? Is she some sort of savvy industry concoction put together in the wake of similarly subtle UK trio the xx's success?

Well, it turns out that she isn't even a "she" at all. The vocalist in question is actually singer/producer Mike Milosh, who's previously released three albums as Milosh on Los Angeles label Plug Research, including 2006's Meme, which features his face on the cover. "I've never thought of myself sounding like a girl," he mildly groused to me over the phone last month. "But I have no control over what people think I sound like-- I'm not going to be like, 'Oh, you don't think I'm man enough?'"

Rhye is a collaboration between Toronto native Milosh and Robin Hannibal of Danish electro-soul outfit Quadron, who both now live in L.A. The pair linked up two years ago when Milosh was commissioned to remix a Quadron song. "I didn't want to do a traditional remix," he says, "so did some singing, and it ended up with me flying to Copenhagen and us doing a song together instead." One song turned into an EP, which eventually led to Rhye's debut full-length, which is out early next year on Polydor/Innovative Leisure/Seven Four.

At the moment, Milosh is putting the finishing touches on his next solo album. As for Rhye, they plan to perform a few low-key shows early next year in Los Angeles, before hitting the road in earnest in March. The touring version of the band will include Milosh and a crew of musicians-- and if anyone's still uncertain as to who's behind the band by then, Milosh assures that the mystery will be put to rest: "People will definitely see who I am-- I'm not going to be hiding behind a mask or anything."

One Sentence Album Review: Lo-fi, languid, sublimely beguiling mashup of chillwave synth with subtle R&B sensibilities.

What Others Are Saying: "Even without a face to attach it to, Rhye's music itself feels deeply intimate. Much of this comes from Hannibal and Milosh's deft arrangements-- each of Woman's 10 songs makes its point with a bare minimum of moving parts. Beats, basslines, and Milosh's voice are at the center of nearly all of them; although a majority of the tracks boast arrangements for horns and strings, most of these are so subtle that you might not even realize they're there until you read the liner notes afterward. The lean production leaves little space between the listener and the songs, and they feel almost touchably close."
