The number of new music releases is starting to increase as summer starts it's big wind-down. We've got some good stuff this week no doubt and another free sampler to boot.

SO -- If you're still into owning music rather than streaming it, the wonderful people at Merge Records are offering a free digital LP sampler on Amazon featuring some of the best of their entire current catalog, including: Mikal Cronin, Superchunk, She & Him, The Mountain Goats and Mount Mariah, plus much, much more.

We don't like to be pinned down but if we had to select our top three songs on the compilation we'd say you can't go wrong with Mikal Cronin and Superchunk, but Bright Light by Mount Mariah is the the most killer cut on the compilation.  You can get the 15 Song Sampler at Amazon and it is absolutely FREE.

We've added all fifteen songs to our monthly playlist on Jivewired Radio.

Here is the track listing:

  1. Weight by Mikal Cronin
  2. Calm Down by The Love Language
  3. FOH by Superchunk
  4. Stare At The Sun by Eleanor Friedberger
  5. Never Wanted Your Love by She & Him
  6. Illusions by Shout Out Louds
  7. Ghosts & Creatures by Telekinesis
  8. Living, Loving, Partygoing by Future Bible Heroes
  9. The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton by The Mountain Goats
  10. Bright Light by Mount Moriah
  11. Born To Die by King Khan & The Shrines
  12. Jean's Waving by Amor de Dias
  13. Christopher Columbus by David Kilgour & the Heavy Eights
  14. Cadillac Desert by William Tyler
  15. If We Were Banished by Radar Brothers

New Spins airs every Tuesday at 7PM and again on Wednesday Afternoons at noon. That's CST in case you were wondering. You can listen via the widget in the right sidebar or click this link to open up the player in a new window: http://live365.com/stations/jivewiredradio.

YOU SPIN ME WITH CREED & CANTER

CREED SAYS: So it's been awhile since I've given my two cents on new music recently. Given the wedding preparation I'm going through, I feel this is my solace. Soooooo...without further adieu...my new LP of the week is actually coming out in Sept 17 on Asian Man Records and Side With Us. The album is "Thread" by the Great Apes. Brian Moss is one of the most honest and prolific songwriters and storytellers out there. I'm lucky to call him a friend. Brian is one of my favourite artists of all time and this time his band does not disappoint. "Thread"is a Bay Area punk rock masterpiece featuring 10 tracks based on conversations with different individuals. Each track is its own story with its own POV. This comes with the highest recommendation possible. Sept 17 is the release day. This album will be forever. For now- check them out at greatapes.bandcamp.com and featured on Jivewired America radio this week! That's all I've got for the week. I'm always looking for new spins, so please share and let me know what's out there!!! Friends. Music. Life.

CANTER SAYS: I'm also a big believer in Great Apes and I probably cannot state my opinion any better than James Creed so I acquiesce to his viewpoint. I will say, the best punk release of the year for me has been by FIDLAR. Great Apes is every bit as good, and dare I say it, a little better. Hoping for big things from these guys. So, now that Creed has left me with "the field" to choose from, I am going to go with Don Domestique by Bear Ceuse. Now of course I am biased because I got an advance copy back in January and you can read my review here, but if you are into bands in the vein of Yo La Tengo, Pavement and Dinosaur Jr., then you absolutely need to get a copy of Don Domestique.

"One listen through and you'll want to surrender your favorite, over-sized flannel to the cute co-ed across the hall. Songs like I Saw It Beating or My Friends are the stuff that those classic home made mixtapes are made of, and either could be your go-to statement song."

That's me quoting myself using my bold and italicized voice for emphasis.  That's saying something.

(Great Apes)

Next week we'll get back to dollar bin pulls, legacy picks and the like. Soon Mr. Creed and I are going to broadcast our weekly picks over Jivewired Radio in combination with a Redux TV simulcast or maybe something bigger we have in the works. Believe that.

Who wants to bet me I can't get a one-on-one with Creed and Bruce Springsteen within eighteen months? Double or nothing I get the Boss to promote the indies?

    VINYL FRONTIER

Collect vinyl with me. This week's selection is Lightning Bolt by Pearl Jam. I've heard one song from this Long Player so far and without a doubt its is the best Pearl Jam has sounded in twenty years.  That song is Mind Your Manners and the rest of the album is such a guarded secret that the band has yet to even release the names of the other 11 tracks.  Now I know everybody -- and I mean EV-E-RY-BO-DY -- equates a solid release almost instantaneously to said band's best release, but there is some validity here. The sample size is small, admittedly, I mean, one song, so I am reaching extensively here. But the quality is there, so I am reaching with high confidence.   Pearl Jam wants to rock like it's 1991 again. I have no problem with that. This vinyl is a pre-order, and don't be like me, ordering multiple copies will not get it here any quicker. Expect delivery October 15th-ish-ish. You can order Lightning Bolt for $24.99 right here and it includes a free download card with album delivery.  Love me some Mookie Blaylock baby!
