Another slow week, no doubt about it.  Memorial Day is near, summer is almost here and Festival Season is here -- so we see less new releases as bands are touring in support of releases from earlier this year and late last year.

BUT -- If you're still into owning music rather than streaming it, the wonderful people at ATO Records are offering a free sampler today on Amazon: Caitlin Rose, Alabama Shakes, Old Crow Medicine Show, Stars, Bobby Long, Trey Anastasio, etc.

Get the fifteen-song sampler here for free:  ATO (FREE) SPRING SAMPLER

YOU SPIN ME WITH JAMES E. CREED & MICHAEL CANTER
(A new music Tuesday primer)

Creed Says: Coming Soon!

Canter Says: My new release for the week is 'Trouble Will Find Me' by The National. We've been playing the advance single "Demons" on Jivewired Radio (powered by Live365) to a lot of positive response. That single is so good it could literally carry this album but in order to truly treasure this album you need to dig way, way deeper. "I Need My Girl" is positively beautiful and 'Humiliation' is right there. Dark, brooding, post-punk and baroque revival. Captivating. My legacy pick for the week is 'London Calling' by The Clash - let's be honest, they changed the face of music in 1979 - in fact, they altered it's history. Raw and versatile, innovative and talented. The album never got it's just due because of Pink Floyd's nearly simultaneous release of 'The Wall' (the albums were released two weeks apart in December 1979). My dollar bin pull of the week, and don't laugh, the eponymous sophomore release by Prince featuring the songs "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad", "I Feel For You" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover" - again, an album that changed the directional course of music by combining R&B with edgy guitar and catchy keyboards. Collector's Vinyl of the week, and I finally found it, the 'No Alternative' compilation from 1982 featuring so many great bands at the early stages of their careers, Smashing Pumpkins, Soul Asylum, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Uncle Tupelo, etc. and of course the amazing 'Verse Chorus Verse' by Nirvana. $30.

VINYL FRONTIER

Collect vinyl with me.  This week's selection is No Alternative by Various Artists, a compilation put out by Paul heck and Chris Mundy to raise money to benefit AIDS Awareness and Relief. It was released on vinyl earlier this year specifically for Record Store Day.

It was released with two different versions of album art: the standard version depicting a boy (without the Nirvana song listed on the back and liner notes), and the alternate version depicting a girl (with the Nirvana song listed on the back and liner notes; however, some CDs have the girl but no Nirvana mention).  Got that?

Also of note, Nirvana changed the name of their song 'Sappy' to 'Verse Chorus Verse' for the CDs that listed Nirvana in the liner notes.

Track Listing:
  1. Superdeformed by Matthew Sweet
  2. For All To See by Buffalo Tom
  3. Sexual Healing by Soul Asylum
  4. Take A Walk by Urge Overkill
  5. All Your Jeans Were Too Tight by American Music Club
  6. Bitch by The Goo Goo Dolls
  7. Unseen Power Of The Picket Fence by Pavement
  8. Glynis by The Smashing Pumpkins
  9. Can't Fight It by Bob Mould
  10. Hold On by Sarah McLachlan
  11. Show Me by Soundgarden
  12. Brittle by Straitjacket Fits
  13. Joed Out by Barbara Manning & The San Francisco Seals
  14. Heavy 33 by The Verlaines
  15. Effigy by Uncle Tupelo
  16. It's The New Style (Live) by The Beastie Boys & DJ Hurricane
  17. Iris (Live) by The Breeders
  18. Memorial Song (Live) by Patti Smith
  19. Verse Chorus Verse by Nirvana (Hidden Track)
Song title 'Verse Chorus Verse' is actually "Sappy", but labeled here as "Verse Chorus Verse", which is also the title of a different Nirvana song.
